How we think about landscape is informed as much by its physical characteristics and its eco-system, as it is by how a landscape has been represented throughout the past by various media. Art history and historical depictions of landscape in paintings, particularly 19th century Romantic paintings, have constructed a romanticised image of landscape that continues to shape how we perceive and create new landscapes today.
In thirty years alone, video games have developed from rudimental two-dimensional and pixelated graphics into three-dimensional virtual spaces that offer a wide variety of sights and sites for players to immerse themselves into. Depending on the core design principles used by game developers, the virtual environment of video games can use historical documents of a landscape’s flora and fauna, in combination with art historical references to create an immersive and engaging environment.
Wish you were here… continues a string of appropriations and remediations from 19th century landscape paintings by Werner Holmberg and Oscar David Friedrich, to name a few, through to Sherrie Levine and Bita Razavi to explore ideas relating to hybridity, convergences and transferences between analogue and digital media and the continuum of physical realities and histories into virtual ones.
